'I'm in favor of making Ai advocates angry,'
this really only makes you look like you debate in bad faith. maybe get someone to proof read or edit your work before publishing?
its a self own.
@mHtt IDK. I’m not a hardcore anti-AI person not an AI doomer or anything. I’ve found it useful for things. And I know people who use it I respect.
But the kind of person who goes around constantly trying to insert AI into every discussion and takes personal affront to even the mildest criticism of it is someone I’m ok with offending.
They have no interest in a discussion or nuance. They just want to shove their view in your face until you acquiesce.
@foobarsoft true AI would be named.
Humans, I believe are incapable of true AI.
If you watch the Animatrix their thesis is that humans create the circumstances for AI; humans create intelligent machines, who in turn create AI.
I personally think this is much more likely. This emergent technology I would describe as 'Automatic Interaction' fashioned with plagiarism finesse by trillion are marketing algorithms.
@foobarsoft due to character limit.
I believe humans are creating a point in the kill chain that creates plausible deniability.
Send in a group of drones to kill a city of people. Blame the AI when things go bad.
That's what it's for, to remove accountability for killing.
@mHtt The name is marketing nonsense, but we’re stuck with it until (if) true artificial intelligence shows up.
As for your other point I don’t see that mattering. They don’t care now, they don’t need “AI” to blame, and I don’t think it being around makes a difference.
i believe it was meant to be from the verb "to parrot", used in the colloquial sense, rather than the animal. Or at least that's how I read it.
But I also understand how literal the internet can be. It's a little less accurate than "statistical text extruder", but a better analogy, imo.
i am going to use the phrase 'stochastic parrot' in everything i write from now on.
thank you!
there needs to be a hashtag
have I been misunderstanding the phrase?
I've always read it as "parrot" being the verb (to mimic) and not like the actual animal.
@Plan_A_to_Y Same difference. The verb comes from a belief that parrots could never understand what they say.
Thing is, if you keep a pet like that - even budgies - you will notice that they may mimic sounds, but they don't mimic all sounds randomly in all situations. Their mimicry expresses a mood, and you can trace that back to the circumstances under which they learned the sound.
That does not mean they make sense of the words, but they do make sense.
i use “stochastic sycophants” and i think it’s:
- more accurate and descriptive
- cuter by the alliteration

Yes! Parrots really are intelligent (in their own totally ruthless way).
I have a fairly good grasp of English and the phrase never made any sense to me. (What do you mean, "stochastic" and "parrot"? Parrots either are or they aren't. They don't pop into existence briefly and wink out, or you come in one morning and they're twice the size as yesterday. I had to find an explanation that said it referred to parroting 🙄 ) Plus, 'stochastic' isn't in most people's vocabularies.
Anyone who wants people to understand what they mean, call it autocomplete. Because that's what it _is_. Except it works on sentences and topics instead of single words.
And it does it with about as much insight, i.e. none, as you say. Like when you're trying to think of metempsychosis and it confidently tells you metamorphosis and you flunk your comparative religions term paper.

Slightly different interpretation: it's not referring to the animal, but to something that without thought or understanding repeats words or imitates actions.
Basically, definition #2: dictionary.com/browse/parrot
It's entertaining that our language has so thoroughly taking this word from an analogy to the animal to its own meaning, and one that probably isn't accurate for the animal at all... =]

Great conversation and a free proactive block of a person with poor ethics, this thread has been a treat!
You can't separate ethics from the stochastic parrot discussion, if you use stochastic parrots you support climate change, deskilling people en masse, fascism, and the largest theft of workers' output in history. Get fucked slopsucker
Emily Bender agrees with you; this is a common misreading of the paper.
Folks have also pointed out that this coinage is somewhat unfair to actual parrots who, for all I know, do have internal lives and do use their ability to mimic human speech with some kind of communicative intent. My best answer here is to say that (despite parrot in stochastic parrot being a noun), I am drawing not on the name of the bird directly but rather on the English verb to parrot, which means to repeat back without understanding.
What Emily Bender Really Meant by "Stochastic Parrots"
Five years later, its lead author revisits the paper in the age of ChatGPTGwendolyn Rak (IEEE Spectrum)
parrot = a bird showing individual intelligence. Hard agree with you.
Stochastic parrot = that added word isn’t a breed or narrowing ** Of Actual Parrots **; it’s a ‘not-really’ term. It’s like vegan leather or oat milk or … ok, I don’t like synthetic diamond, cuz chemically some are diamonds… uh… maybe silicone grout? A stochastic parrot is some thingy which _resembles_ a parrot.
(Offered entirely in hopes of tipping scales toward making AI fans stfu and stop anthropomorphizing their toys. I’m a fan of any tactic which gives them pause)
@cascheranno " A stochastic parrot is some thingy which _resembles_ a parrot"
So a drunk middle-aged man is a stochastic parrot.
@si_fuller c’mon, you just nailed twenty four hundred years of no. Plato defined Man as a featherless biped; Diogenes plucked a chicken and proclaimed : behold, a man!’
Other things that ramble like parrots exist. Like me. G’nite.
agreed; I even like ‘parroter’ to clarify this adjectival form is pseudo-__, or synthetic / resembling, but not a parrot.
Hmm. The pair seems not quite an oxymoron (but close).
After much search, the grammatical term seems to be Privative Adjective / Modifier. More examples: Kangaroo Court, stuffed animal, synthetic turf.
Best sentence I've read all year

Scientists Taught Pet Parrots to Video Call Each Other—and the Birds Loved It
Wild parrots tend to fly in flocks, but when kept as single pets, they may become lonely and boredSarah Kuta (Smithsonian Magazine)
@jplebreton I mean, that's IMHO one of the major flaws of most research into animals' inner lives. That, and the inverse.
One particularly enraging study I read was about pain. Scientists electrocuted fish if they got near some place, and observed that when subjected to the electro shocks, the fish behaved much like humans would when subjected to pain. They also observed the fish avoided triggering the sensation.
Result? "It's inconclusive whether fish experience pain"

-The pulse that guy has his finger on.
From what I understand, parrots don't mimic other sounds in the wild ( unlike the Lyre Bird) ie. reproducing any sound and in particular human speech is only done in captivity.
@jplebreton I get that you can't project human experience onto animals. But it's also true that "it behaves as if, but inconclusive" is pretty much a psychopath's response to other people.
So "cognition, but perhaps different" is a *massive* step, IMHO.
I Can't Believe It's Not As Smart As A Parrot
rolls right off the tongue
I think the term is not insulting to parrots; the “stochastic” part is the important part. Like something being as useful as a chocolate teapot. It doesn’t degrade teapots.
But also, “parrot” is the verb we have for mindless repetition, fair or not.
This is the same issue as using clown as a pajorative.

This is perhaps the biggest similarity with the fascists.
Unpopular opinion: there is nothing magical about AI.
Simplified: It's just a bunch of tokenised data that goes through a couple score billion if-statements with something analogous to a bunch of single-instruction-multiple-data 8-bit operations, resulting in an output of a bunch of tokenised data. And even that is done in a loop.
Wake me up when the weighted if-statements have analogue parameters, can manage multiple simultaneous dynamic inputs, and can be powered by a Mars bar and a mug of coffee. 😅

Yes, but— it is immune from laws. And that makes it more powerful than a conventional computer program, in fact arguably more powerful than a human

The america.gov thing is an embarrassment but the middle of the rant about US government web sites being worse than the private sector reminded me of how much I appreciate the gov.uk infrastructure.
It’s designed to work well with low-bandwidth devices. It works well on large and small screens. It runs in ancient browsers. It has a consistent interface. The buttons are big and clear. It doesn’t use colour contrast that’s problematic for colour-blind users. It works well with accessibility tools. It has its own extended markdown variant that captures semantic markup for common things so that they can be usefully exposed structurally to other tools.
Private-sector web sites could learn a lot from it.

@crystalmoon I wonder if serving remote images for unauthenticated users would be a good compromise. It seems like some people think the same according to GitHub.
Either that or more and more servers will decide to not serve content unauthenticated users in general
One question, I want to build a social media aggregator, where I will show posts from X, Mastodon, Threads (only federated accounts) and BlueSky.
How ethical, and proper would this be, since I would use Mastodon API?
@gjorgji_vasileski Using the API itself is fine, that's what it's there for. The tricky part is consent. A lot of people on the fediverse really don't like their posts being pulled into other platforms without asking, and there's been a fair bit of backlash against projects that did it.
If you go ahead, I'd make it opt-in, or at the very least respect people's "discoverable"/noindex settings and #nobot tags, and make sure deletes and edits carry over. Also worth checking instances rules.
Excellent, this is very good information. In my initial demo, I plan to pull posts only from artist that make mini comics, and hopefully they will not mind, but I will put a feature to opt out in case they don't want it. This is because I really enjoy them on Mastodon
Also, the data won't be persistent at all, I plan max of 30 days retention, so if your post is older than 30 days, it won't reapear, maybe only viral posts could be kept let's say more.
Thank you very much for the info
In the past, projects that went with "opt-out" features got a very negative reception. Many people do not consider that to be consent. You'd be much safer restricting it to accounts that actively opt in.
