Dear Fedi friends,

I want to share a discovery that made my MONTH.

10 days ago, while I was putting together the slides for my presentation at Berlin #FediDay, I noticed a new entry in the @cercle directory (the Mastodon instance set up by the Service Numérique of the French Ministry of Culture):

✨ @MuseeOrsay ✨

Ouiiiiii!

Paris' super prestigious museum - that welcomed 7.3 million visitors last year - is now on the #Fediverse !!! 🥳

Let's give Musée d'Orsay a warm welcome ❤️

Here is an article about this Mastodon instance for french culture institutions, near one year after its launch les-enovateurs.com/avec-mastodon-la-fronde-discrete-des-institutions-culturelles-contre-les-platefor…
@cercle
Interesting article, but it looks like somebody at NBC is busy playing #FireEmblemFortunesWeave at work: Almyra is a fictional region from that game, and the interviewee probably meant Aymara instead.
Quote: Nogales-Ascarrunz said, however, that local communities in Bolivia have been aware of the species’ presence for generations. “This cat, they call it tilcayo. And when you ask, ‘Does it have some meaning in Quechua or Almyra and other Indigenous languages?’ they say, ‘No, my grandpa told me that’s the tilcayo,’” Nogales-Ascarrunz said. “This is a traditional knowledge that they have in the community. We want to preserve that knowledge and we didn’t want to give it another name.”

A river that is home to about 500 saltwater crocodiles is given the OK to host Olympic and Paralympic rowing and canoeing events at the 2032 Brisbane Games.

I assume their logic is, the survivors of Olympic rowing earn a spot in the Paralympic rowing?

A hype cycle is just Dunning-Kruger effect on a societal scale, over time.

This is not Dunning-Kruger effect. This is:

@comparegravel first of all, it's called "Dunning-Kruger effect", not "Dinning Kruger effect". When you venture to correct someone, at least get the name right.

Secondly, the chart in your post is the chart of "relation between average self-perceived performance and average actual performance on a college exam", taken from Wikipedia.

The chart I used is a chart of confidence expressed in a given subject versus actual knowledge in that subject. These are different charts about the same effect.

in reply to Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦
I don't put much stock into proper name (and the phone did some auto correct I didn't notice). The chart and basically everybody when talking about DKE are saying that people with less knowledge are more confident, and that later their confidence "drops to zero", and lastly experts have almost the same confidence as people with no expertise.
You can point that graph I included shows different function than what's commonly stated. But that's **my point: **it's not DKE 😉.

#EdSheeran had two choices:

❌ Take the loss, cancel the tour, maybe retire from singing

✅ Double down and open a contest to replace all the acts that stepped down in solidarity with #Macklemore (effectively picket scabs)

On one hand: the neo-Confederate Eyes of Sauron might be trivial to shut down remotely. On the other hand: this also means they might be trivial to access by any attacker. Even more of a reason to shut them down and fast, I say. micahflee.com/flock-cameras-are-riddled-with-security-vulnerabilities-and-hard-coded-credentials/ #Flock

I call my inner critic Nigel. So whenever that little voice says I'm not good enough, I say, 'shut up, Nigel!' out loud and feel much better. Recently met a guy I vibed with and we're going on a date tonight. His name is Nigel.

I like this Mongolian metal video where a shifty young man in a hoodie gets Summoned before the Ancestor Warriors so they can chant aggressively at him that a Real Man is polite, honest, gentle, kind and generous (and good at stabbing dudes when the situation calls for it)

For any fellow Mastodon server admins in the UK, I'm aware of the Social Media Platforms (Ofcom Licensing) Act 2026.

It would make it basically illegal to run a Mastodon server as a UK citizen.

It's a private member's bill and it's not likely to pass, I'm starting the lobbying against it. It won't pass on my watch. It's a good faith effort to solve a very specific problem but it's too broad.

@alexadeswift we have UK users, but are a German hosted server.

@GossiTheDog thanks for shining light on this. Could I ask you to alt-text the image for our vision-impaired users?

Here’s a poem about one of my cat’s poems. It’s called “On ‘,,,;;pppppp’[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’”.

now I've heard you read this, I was struck how well your cat had written this to coincide with what you could manage to say in a single breath; all those "left-square-bracket,"s, for example. Nice one.

I have a funny habit: when I take a break at home, instead of locking my computer, I leave an empty text editor open. When I come back, I read what my cats had to say.

I wonder if there will be divestments after the #EdSheeran / #Macklemore incident. Game Freak could release a patch to replace the song Sheeran made for one of their old Pokemon games, for example. (Not like it was particularly liked by the fans, so, bonus)
The shenanigans from Foster the People's "Houdini" music video may or may not be involved in this unexpected return. #MitchMcConnell nbcnews.com/politics/congress/mitch-mcconnell-returns-senate-three-month-absence-rcna597815

As somebody who tried learning German (with Duolingo, which sadly is barely helpful) and still can't read half the trending posts on Mastodon: same Elena, same.

Me: "I want to learn German."

Them: "Why would you do that? Don't bother!"

Me: "Because I spend half my time on the Fediverse clicking on the 'Translate' button."

I can't help it if so many of the awesome accounts I follow are in German. And I want to be able to understand their messages without clicking on 'Translate' 50+ times a day. Plus this way I would understand / could attend ALL the talks at Berlin #FediDay.

I'm putting this here so that people hold me accountable 😅🤗

Everyone knows that in robotics many tasks are easy, but seemingly simple tasks, such as cleaning a room or doing the dishes are hard.

Well I have solved every room cleaning task. First the entire room is fed into an industrial shredding machine, the valuable metals are recovered by melting the dust. The rest is trashed. Then I 3D print everything in the room, only in the correct locations so that the room is cleaned.

@mycotropic Also isn't this the theory behind the Star Trek transporter and other teleportation devices?

Satirized in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy song "Teleportation Blues":

in reply to myrmepropagandist

I heard you're also buying historic buildings that are in need of repair at a fraction of their true value, extracting the flower vases and wallpaper patterns, then dumping the remaining 99% of shreddings in the nearest reservoir as "waste that has now served its purpose".

How do you respond to those who would prefer their drinking water to be less poisonous, or are unhappy about breathing the clouds of asbestos dust resulting from the shredding process?

Last weekend, roughly 200 media, IT, and policy people met at #FediDay Berlin to discuss the status quo & future of the #Fediverse & decentralized #SocialMedia.

Our @lxplm also attended – albeit on behalf of #SWR X Lab (welcome to the #ARD federation). Together with @Silbendrechsler (who runs the @3sat account), he discussed ongoing Fedi projects in the world of German public broadcasting.

The session (& many others) will be available via @peertube soon.

For updates, follow @berlinfediday.

in reply to DW Innovation

Very cool that you mentioned it! 💜

And it was nice to meet @lxplm and @Silbendrechsler! We had nice conversations! 🙂

I hope more journalists will become aware of the harmful impact that Big Tech social media can have, and of how journalism, together with civil society, can become one of our strongest forces for protecting democracy.

Ah, and #LeaveX. 😉
