The idea that reading a book in public is considered 'performative' says everything you need to know about the dramatic decline in the intelligence of society.

Here's a fun little @libreoffice trick, that I've just stumbled across by accident:

If you select some text (e.g. triple click, or drag-to-select), and then type an opening bracket, it is automatically closed at the end of the selected text.

It works for (, [, and {.

in reply to Neil Brown
This is a very surreal thing to read because I regularly do this in VS Code and Godot's code editor. You need brackets of varying kinds a lot while writing code, and LibreOffice sounds like software that you could possibly write in, so, it makes sense for it to be there!

⛓️ Today, Google has taken the next step in enclosing the #Android ecosystem by starting to enforce its developer verification program in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

No better time than now to recommend the best apps from everyone's favorite #FOSS app store, F-Droid.

We'll start: Librera Reader, Image Toolbox, LocalSend, AntennaPod, FMD, Capy Reader, Unexpected Keyboard, Voice Audiobook Player, Aegis Authenticator...

Facebook/Meta are now demanding a monthly fee from owners of Facebook Pages to post links to outside sites:

socialmediatoday.com/news/facebook-pages-get-charged-for-link-posts/830743

The monthly fee Meta are demanding for posting links on Facebook Pages is quite astonishing:

US$50 per month for 8 links
US$150 per month for 20 links
US$500 per month for unlimited links

This is many times more than the cost of running your own website, cloud and social media server all put together. Independence is much cheaper and better.

I realize that people and organizations have to go where their friends and customers are, but something became apparent early on in the commercialization of the Internet, and most of us shrugged it off:

Before entering a walled garden, one should check that there are easy exits.

So glad to have exited that particular garden when the vines started to overtake.

in reply to Per Haps ✅✔✓☑

@perhaps391

I sympathise with organisations that have to do this, but they could at least provide people with an alternative to walled gardens. If they don't provide alternatives, then they are forcing their own customers into the walled gardens too.

In this essay I will explain how "Amelia Bedelia" is actually an exemplary warning of how undiagnosed neurodiversity can affect the workplace

I love the fact journalists think up pun headlines and sit on them, often for years, until they are appropriate. For example, when Madonna appeared drunk on stage in 2016, the Sun headline 'Like a third gin' must have been in some hack's head since 1984.

Of all the things that facebook ruined, it was all the small clubs and events moving their online presence there. No more niche websites or forums. Just the dreary homogony of everything in the one same place - and assumption you were on facebook in the first place.

And which has become a trap. No matter how much you want nothing to do with Meta FB has become the town crier and public notice board. If you want to take part in local life you have no alternative options.

On one hand: one of the few apps that support both #ActivityPub, Threadiverse groups and #RSS natively. On the other: it's the fork of an existing active web app and seems to be heavily vibe-coded. My search for a successor to #Friendica continues, I suppose. codefloe.com/catodon/catodon

#PicaTheCat is proud to announce her upcoming album! Sixteen mournful tunes in her unforgettable haunting voice.

It can clear a room or frighten most small animals. Songs you won't be able to skip (because Pica has disabled the feature when you play it)

1. Where is everyone?
2. The Bowl is full, but still hungry I am.
3. Lament of the lost rubber mouse.
4. Sounds from behind the couch.
5. 3am
6. 4am
7. Wake up primates!!

And many more!

On one hand, the respect of consent is necessary for a proper society. On the other hand, the logical extreme implies that even approaching a stranger should be considered coercive (cf. hebaber.substack.com/p/talking-to-strangers ). How can society even exist, if anything other than pre-existing relationships is intrinsically violent?

Faded cave glyphs offer fresh clues to Teotihuacan's ancient writing system

Research Article:
Christophe Helmke et al, Painted Teotihuacan glyphs of Cave 19, Chalcatzingo, Morelos, Mexico, Antiquity(2026). DOI: 10.15184/aqy.2026.10425 (Open access)

Snippet:

The cave, known as Cave 19, is in a region where people from the powerful ancient city of Teotihuacan established settlements and carried out rituals. The Teotihuacan Empire flourished centuries before the Aztecs and is known for its giant pyramids, culture and art. The images have faded over time, and some parts are now difficult to see with the naked eye.

[…]

In addition to filling in some missing details about these ancient rock paintings, the study could tell us more about Teotihuacan. For decades, experts have debated whether the symbols found on Teotihuacan buildings and pottery were evidence of a writing system or just decorative pictures. The new research at Chalcatzingo strengthens the case for a writing system. As the researchers note, "Teotihuacan writing can therefore no longer be dismissed or considered as a set of isolated or emblematic symbols."

“Can I do it?” is a terrible measure of disability.

Yes, I can do it.

Can I do it repeatedly?

Can I do it safely?

Can I do it without support?

Can I do anything afterwards?

Can I do it tomorrow too?

What does doing it COST?

These tell me a lot more about my capability.

Whenever you place a bet there's a tacit agreement that there's at least the possibility of a win. So if you're running an amusement arcade and the settings on the claw machine make it impossible to pick up a teddy, then that is not only theft, but theft from kids

ban them both. They're both preying on people who are convinced they have more skill than they do.

The kid will be disappointed when they loose. That's the end of it, as mum isn't giving them more money.

If an adult losses their sports bet, they'll keep on going as they have a credit card. And if they end up being like my former local member, they end up "borrowing" money from local businesses when they cannot repay their credit card bill. And the idiot constituents will continue to vote for him, even after he was kicked out of the Nats because of said theft (cc @devopscats - Division of Morehell)
