Seriously: that's the whole ethos of "rich" folks. Their money only goes towards getting other people to give them money. It's why you sometimes see tasteless "donate to help [person]" call-to-action when they could have paid it with pocket change themselves; it's how they're used to doing everything. If a venture fails then everyone only gets dinged a little instead of one person crashing out entirely (in-circle protection).

All omarchy is is a vibe-coded set of install scripts for Arch Linux. This will not take over the world, imcrease stability, or decrease compile times.

There's a reason why Arch is a very niche distro. It's the bleeding-edge rolling-release distro where things can and will break. Most people want stability with something that is guaranteed to work, and often settle for a staged release distro like Debian instead.

The only reason why these companies are backing #Omarchy is that it was rapidly developed using AI, by piggybacking on an already developed Linux distro. Their short-sightedness sees this as a promising proof of concept for use in marketing their AI crap, when it really isn't anything that special.

They don't care about the politics. This is just the usual #AI tulip mania situation. They are rats, and Omarchy is the empty grain silo.

@retsel Precisely. Omarchy is simply being used as a marketing stunt to promote AI. These corporate losers are funding it in the hopes that idiots hook their paid API keys into it, and waste thousands of dollars of tokens on it.

They need to fund their expensive overbuilding of data centers with something. Many of these companies are 9-12 figure amounts of dollars in the red over this AI stuff, and they desparately needed paying customers 2 years ago, hence the reason for this marketing stunt.

If it breaks it breaks in a unixy and deterministic way in a single place that can be understood.
Even if it may be systemd stuff :-)
The last thing I want on my #archlinux is ‘magic’.

As someone who uses a fair bit of software in the "niche, really good, made by 1 dude" genre, I 100% second this on the "Arch is nicer than debian" front - especially when it comes to package dependencies. No, seriously apt, I don't want to install the entirety of gnome to make screencasting work on niri, I just want the damn desktop portal!

Also, last time I checked hardware surveys from steam and some more mainstream YT channels, arch was the most popular

Rich people playing money games. It's not like Digital Ocean or 1Password spent a lot of time as a company thinking about this. Someone with access to the company checkbook wrote a check and asked someone to write some PR copy about it. The end.

And for Digital Ocean, they are washing this as "Omarchy is going to use us as their entire CICD pipeline and package hosting" so most of the money they spend is coming right back eventually and they probably get a little tax benefit out of it.

Smells a lot like Nvidia lending OpenAI money to buy Nvidia, just at a different scale. Same shit different day.

edit: usually this type of shit is worked out on golf courses and doesn't get much fanfare

I already mentioned this in enough places that I sound like a shill: I'm not - yet? - aware of any abuses by Ramnode or their owner Inmotion, and Ramnode's stuff is cheap.

A few years ago I had one small server at DigitalOcean, one at Linode, and one at Ramnode. I shut the one at Linode down because I went from hosting my own email to using Tuta, and I shut the Ramnode one down because I stopped using the software on it.

This week I'll move my DigitalOcean server to Ramnode.

Linode was bought by Akamai, which is big enough that I don't trust them either.

I had a cheap server on Ramnode for years without issues. They were bought by Inmotion.

Life being the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised if Inmotion supports Omarchy and the executives snack on puppies. I haven't seen anything unusually evil about them ...yet... so I'm probably going to move my DigitalOcean server back there already.

Note that the pricing at Ramnode is still cheaper than at Inmotion, though I don't know how long that will last.

Omacom has reportedly filed for US 501(c)(3) status. All these "donations" may or may not be eligible for a write-off.

It is also not clear if these donations have actually been made or just promised. If this foundation is approved by the IRS the tax filings should tell a more complete story in the years to come.

@radhitya well, that's money they made from us, their users. So, if they want to spend this money on slop like this instead of their infrastructure or just... cutting their prices, than it is absolutely reasonable for a user to leave.

Especially if it is true, that it was a funding agreement negotiated during a weekend based on the CEO's personal discussion with Omarchy's creator.
