And soon enough we'll be forced to stop interacting with companies, period, if we don't want to be complicit in this. A shame that means going to some commune in the middle of nowhere
Alas, if only there was a way to build hardware that wasn't tainted at some point by slavery, corporate crimes, illegal surveillance, patent abuse, or a long list of other issues
Doing better is a goal. Make as many ethical choices as you can, and yes, maybe compromise where you must. We all have to live our life, but where it's possible to do better....do better.
If it helps, I've been *very* happy with @upcloud since I moved early last year - their feature-set and interface is pretty much a drop-in DO replacement
@sraars it's probably no coincidence they're on a bunch of SMTP blacklists now and have been AI grifting for a while. man, it was so good at the very beginning, so much easier than linode. what the fuck happened?
Recordings show that while he was the CEO of Digital Ocean, Yancey Spruill told staff that they should bend their values because "we love the company."
@hoboshrimps Why use your own money when you could be using others.
Seriously: that's the whole ethos of "rich" folks. Their money only goes towards getting other people to give them money. It's why you sometimes see tasteless "donate to help [person]" call-to-action when they could have paid it with pocket change themselves; it's how they're used to doing everything. If a venture fails then everyone only gets dinged a little instead of one person crashing out entirely (in-circle protection).
I love seeing people see this project for what it is and what it stands for. Keep up the good fight. We need to create a list of companies supporting this.
This is simply just yet more corporate money burning on this AI bubble.
All omarchy is is a vibe-coded set of install scripts for Arch Linux. This will not take over the world, imcrease stability, or decrease compile times.
There's a reason why Arch is a very niche distro. It's the bleeding-edge rolling-release distro where things can and will break. Most people want stability with something that is guaranteed to work, and often settle for a staged release distro like Debian instead.
The only reason why these companies are backing #Omarchy is that it was rapidly developed using AI, by piggybacking on an already developed Linux distro. Their short-sightedness sees this as a promising proof of concept for use in marketing their AI crap, when it really isn't anything that special.
They don't care about the politics. This is just the usual #AI tulip mania situation. They are rats, and Omarchy is the empty grain silo.
@alice_pea_3526 But the marketing material implies everything can be fixed if enough AI gets thrown at it. They even have a domain for it: wecanfixeverything.com/
@retsel Precisely. Omarchy is simply being used as a marketing stunt to promote AI. These corporate losers are funding it in the hopes that idiots hook their paid API keys into it, and waste thousands of dollars of tokens on it.
They need to fund their expensive overbuilding of data centers with something. Many of these companies are 9-12 figure amounts of dollars in the red over this AI stuff, and they desparately needed paying customers 2 years ago, hence the reason for this marketing stunt.
@alice_pea_3526 On the contrary - I’ve been running arch for a while and appreciate that it does not break in some confusing and chaotic way caused by a steaming pile of magic comfort automations. If it breaks it breaks in a unixy and deterministic way in a single place that can be understood. Even if it may be systemd stuff The last thing I want on my #archlinux is ‘magic’. OTOH I have grey hair.
@chris @alice_pea_3526 As someone who uses a fair bit of software in the "niche, really good, made by 1 dude" genre, I 100% second this on the "Arch is nicer than debian" front - especially when it comes to package dependencies. No, seriously apt, I don't want to install the entirety of gnome to make screencasting work on niri, I just want the damn desktop portal!
Also, last time I checked hardware surveys from steam and some more mainstream YT channels, arch was the most popular
@wizbean a big gift to Omarchy is a signal to their fellow fascists that decent people's power in tech is waning and that they are ready to profess their fascist beliefs openly without fear of giving up capital or career advancement. The dotfiles have nothing to do with it.
@wizbean That's a good comparison, really. Like Trump's obscene "Board of Peace", Omarchy is self-evidently nothing but a means for corporations to declare their support for genocide.
@wizbean It is an inexplicably overhyped repackaging of Arch with a bunch of buggy slop shell scripts that configure it to the liking of a fascist shithead (dhh).
@niklasnisbeth @tehstu OK. I just guessed from his nationality. This was a mistake. Grifters register on one of the countries appropriate for this purpose, of course. For example the Bahamas or Panama.
@glitzersachen @niklasnisbeth I'm not even sure this Foundation exists, honestly. The Omarchy page only alludes to it, with no linked information about the entity itself.
i'd say "you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy" but sadly, there are plenty of others doing business on the internet. that said, blocking DO IP prefixes sure makes my email and ssh logs a lot quieter.
Why the FUCK is seemingly every company in Silicon Valley lining up to throw their money at some random fascist's dotfiles??? So many nice little *actual* Linux distros which could've done great things with that kind of money
@mort @davidgerard The uber-rich, as well as fascists, support each other. If someone were to perform a deep-dive on the personal lives of the C-suites of the donor orgs, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned up a lot of dreck.
@dch @mort it's not so much "the company" as it is "DHH hangs out with execs of these companies, and he's convinced them to misuse company funds"
Rich people playing money games. It's not like Digital Ocean or 1Password spent a lot of time as a company thinking about this. Someone with access to the company checkbook wrote a check and asked someone to write some PR copy about it. The end.
And for Digital Ocean, they are washing this as "Omarchy is going to use us as their entire CICD pipeline and package hosting" so most of the money they spend is coming right back eventually and they probably get a little tax benefit out of it.
Smells a lot like Nvidia lending OpenAI money to buy Nvidia, just at a different scale. Same shit different day.
edit: usually this type of shit is worked out on golf courses and doesn't get much fanfare
@prasket I already mentioned this in enough places that I sound like a shill: I'm not - yet? - aware of any abuses by Ramnode or their owner Inmotion, and Ramnode's stuff is cheap.
A few years ago I had one small server at DigitalOcean, one at Linode, and one at Ramnode. I shut the one at Linode down because I went from hosting my own email to using Tuta, and I shut the Ramnode one down because I stopped using the software on it.
This week I'll move my DigitalOcean server to Ramnode.
Linode was bought by Akamai, which is big enough that I don't trust them either.
@diegovsky But it worked when Jimmy Kimmel was ousted. Disney couldn't cave fast enough. They still are down in subscribers. We just need to do it ALL TOGETHER!! And then, when we stripped them of large amounts of their revenue, we will take out the guns. Because as long as they have money, the cops/military (where's the difference nowadays, anyways?) will come faster to their protection as we can call to arms. #GrabEmByTheirWallet @nixCraft
@jasoncrowther Bear in mind that Bitwarden has a private equity chud helping the founder out, Michael Sullivan who was CEO of Acquia and InsightSoftware.
They have already raised prices, I had just left for KeePass (finally settled for now) because when a private equity chud goes to an open source project, it's concerning.
A Fediverse community project compiling a growing list of brands that keep supporting the axis of evil: the US, Israel, and Russia, and the sociopath billionaire Epstein class on its imperialist colonizer quest that is a direct threat to the rule of …
@wonderfox_floof @gyrusinczky Omarchy is lead by DHH, who is openly racist and anti-trans. There are a lot of articles on it, and you can dig through his personal blog to find evidence.
On 8 October 2024 I received an email from Hetzner. This was a forwarded abuse report. As is standard practice in the web hosting business Hetzner forwarded this to me so I could take action on it. This was no ordinary abuse report.
@joewells i'm personally moving to upcloud. haven't heard bad things about them yet, well besides providing ai-oriented gpu servers like every other big provider
@outfrost @joewells I had a cheap server on Ramnode for years without issues. They were bought by Inmotion.
Life being the way it is, I wouldn't be surprised if Inmotion supports Omarchy and the executives snack on puppies. I haven't seen anything unusually evil about them ...yet... so I'm probably going to move my DigitalOcean server back there already.
Note that the pricing at Ramnode is still cheaper than at Inmotion, though I don't know how long that will last.
Omacom has reportedly filed for US 501(c)(3) status. All these "donations" may or may not be eligible for a write-off.
It is also not clear if these donations have actually been made or just promised. If this foundation is approved by the IRS the tax filings should tell a more complete story in the years to come.
I have a vm with them but hadn't logged into their portal in a long time. Like every other company they seemed to have swallowed the AI pill hard and re-branded their entire business. I was already going to move away just for that, but now I have a better reason.
@simagick yeahh I'm personally gonna hold off on moving until I hear of an alternative that credibly wouldn't do the same thing. everything advertises AI in their UI these days
UGH. This hurts. I've used them for years and they have some of the best documentation. Guess I'm pulling them as my cloud provider though. Question is......where do I go?
this is so stupid much money and its literally spent on nothing. yomarchy is not some os its not some new project its just some config for existing opensource stuff wtf.
why do people who make such uninformed investments have so much money in the first place wjat the helllll
just closed my account with them. Honestly I was in the process of moving to a European provider anyway for data sovereignty reasons but this just gave me the final push.
is there a running count of how much this fucker has managed to raise so far?
maybe i'm just being paranoid, but with how much it feels he's getting, i'm seriously starting to worry he's angling for hard forks of big projects under the guise of "independence" or something like that...
