Which #Fediverse option are you considering‽ #WordPress with the #ActivityPub plugin enabled‽
Depending on the host, that would be a less expensive option.

Oooh, interesting option! They could move their existing accounts to a third party server... not as great as their own server obviously, but much better than just deleting the accounts.
And it means if they bring the server back at some point they can move the accounts back there. The social graph would be preserved.

Still, you would lose all attached discussion threads.

And I see that method only being viable for instance admins and users they explicitely trust.
If importing posts is an option you allow any user on your instance, spammers go "here's a handcrafted import package with billions of spam messages". Even checking for "original existence on the instance the user is migrating from" would not help, as that could be a throwaway instance from the spammers themselves. Any other scenario has even fewer plausability checks.

However the point of my post was the #fediverse has a logo and it's not a blue elephant.
Though I suppose there could be a crossover in that the #fediverse I use is totally against letting #facebook in, despite the existence of players looking to become glitterati in the next Xitter, because choice is the power of the #fediverse.

It is unacceptable for the EU Commission to provide support for Meta/FB's role in hate speech [1] [2], its role in the #RohingyaGenocide [3][4] and its role in the #TigrayGenocide [5][6].

I hope that the final setup will be a server run by one of the EU institutions, with accounts for all the different bodies and - why not - staff of the EU organs.

in reply to European Commission • • •I'm glad to hear that!
I must say, though, that I'm having a hard time trying to make this announcement consistent with the one from @EDPS : they mentioned an issue keeping the server and service at the "high standards that EUIs and our users deserve" but you talk about moving somewhere else so I'm kind of wondering how a 3rd party could meet these standards...

in reply to European Commission • • •Going from most important:
1. Closed-registration server in europa.eu domain was a better guarantee of profile authenticity than looking for the green bars in profiles on some random public instances. We're talking about one of the biggest orgs in the world.
2. Theses profiles will be dependent on third-party admins for moderation, accessibility etc.
3. I don't believe every profile will move. I suspect we'll loose some in the process.

Otherwise all will think you post a commitment now and forget about it after the election.
Be sure there are lot of people out there watching you, handling decentralized open source projects and your response to edps.europa.eu/press-publicati… .

Would you be able to share more information soon enough? We appreciate our right to be informed about all things related to EU and not being tracked by big tech. Your previous announcement brought a lot of concerns about your presence on Fediverse and we believe that without your comment soon enough it might be discouraging for more public services considering switching to Fediverse.

And if not, then how do they want to govern the EU if they are unable to maintain a simple Fediverse server or start planning early enough to solve the question of how to continue running it after time period x ends?
