What the fuck? Vimeo telling me I need to submit to age verification to keep using my account that I pay for?
What stratospheric levels of bullshit is this?
Fuck you, Vimeo. As painful as it will be, you just lost a customer. Fuckers.

You need a bank account to pay for something remotely (not in cash) whether it's by credit card or otherwise.
Both your bank account and your credit card is linked to your name. Banks require ID cards to let people have bank accounts and deliver credit cards based on gov IDs, so anything you pay for by any non-cash method is already linked to your gov ID… No need for "age verification" BS for that…

Not at all saying this is a good thing, simply saying it is the current state of the systems involved.

It does.
Merchants get a surprising amount of signals from the payment processor.
They literally must, or they would not be able fulfill their tax obligations.
And at the other hand the banks/card issuers are by KYC/KYB/AML regulations (these have teeth, with penalties hitting the C-suite of done wrongly), so not being transparent to your back is literally a nonstarter.

And you'll find out that payment API let the merchant exactly know what kind of card is being used.
Literally that the card is throw away one use number that my fintech creates? That is also communicated, you know so you cannot use it for subscriptions.
And so on.
The card companies literally tell the merchant many things.
Why does the site need the exact ID, when it has their attributes/signals like adult from the payment institution?

in reply to Neil E. Hodges • • •Again, banking has rather tough KYC rules. If they say you are you, and issue you a card, that's generally good enough for commercial grade ID.

The only ones who will submit to this bullshit are the ones who are paying Vimeo a lot to host vast amounts of video they can't easily move off or don't want to linkrot.

They're absolutely interested in both dropping low-dollar users and absolving themselves of content moderation.

So far only my Sony Playstation account has asked for age verification to continue using in game chat but strangely I can still chat on Fortnite on my PS4 without issue. I don't have a card associated with my account so they can't even use that as a proxy.

in reply to Raymond Russell • • •Given that my PS4 finally died that this was a unit that was one of the first models released. I don’t have a use for ps+ or Sony much anymore because I don’t like the way games have gone and I don’t like the way the platforms have gone and I don’t like the price. It’s just it’s not worth it anymore.

I enjoy having a PS4 (slim) but I am not a hard core game and I am unlikely to replace my console when it goes kaput.

in reply to Raymond Russell • • •I am a tinkerer. If my PS4 was to have minor problem(s) I would probably have a go at fixing it. I have managed to spill coke on both my controllers at different times and they got sticky and needed cleaned internally to work properly. It was quite simple process and I may even replace the batteries soon as they are definitely holding much less charge these days.

But as others have pointed out… bending spoons…
And also the age verification stuff is spreading like wildfire

I've been tempted to self host some videos, but I think I'd rather go down the route of writing a little bash script to generated done video pages with an RSS feed. Seems easier to me.

Patches are something that you’ll need
Here’s mine. I added collections and hashtag features:

I would suggest minor UI tweaks such as adding text to the upload hashtag box label to explain that you press Enter after each hashtag as opposed to using commas. [But I’ll try to make both work in the future.]
I’ve added other minor tweaks such as letting #christmas and #xmas be interchangeable. But the big differences are hashtag search and simple collections. I’d like to submit those two features to upstream, but I don’t think that he’ll take them.
The takeaway is really that PeerTube, especially with a few tweaks, is ready for prime-time. It’s positive to know that there is a FOSS alternative to YouTube.

One of the videos on my PeerTube is of a woman who’s about to give birth. It’s from a reality TV show [but not one of the games]. The mother contacted me and said part of the deal with the TV show was that YouTube would host the video. But, 1 or 2 decades later, she wasn’t able to log-in to YouTube and had no way to D/L the video. She asked me to get the video for her and I did.
With #selfhosting you’re not dealing with a platform that is there solely to monetize your life and creativity and there is nobody to help you even to log-in.
How did we get to the point where that was not only acceptable but expected?
FWIW On my PeerTube, every video has a D/L link. It’s in a “…” box beneath each video. This is the way that it ought to be.

I host the standard html5 'player' HTML page along with a few tweaks on nginx so you end up with this, for example, which can be neatly wrapped in an iframe for a bit of extra styling.

Working so far, in my Small Web prototype using Kitten¹:
• Uploads
• Automatic transcription (via tiny offline LLM)
• Watch online
• Share direct video link
Also fixing a couple of bugs in Kitten as I go so this should make the automatic uploads feature in Kitten more robust (in main, currently, the serving of videos is broken as we’re not properly handling range requests. Will be fixed in the next release.)
The prototype currently has a little over 200 lines of code (HTML + CSS + JS).
