The most important thing I learned in my 20s is that being smart doesn't make you special. Eventually you need to learn to try hard and to enjoy learning to do things you're not immediately good at. It turns out that the people who didn't learn this lesson were reading Harry Potter fanfic.

Personally, I think that talent is dangerously overappreciated. The fact that we still appreciate talent over ethical concerns is one of the very reasons why our world is how it currently is. Specifically, assuming that talent is somehow unique, unreplaceable, and worth all the problematic issues with a person because the alternative is somehow murdering all chance of future progress.

This is a good lesson to share. Granted, I am a smart, hard worker who loves to learn. Hasn’t won me any prizes, but is one of the few things that hasn’t been taken from me either. Think if more people strive for this and take responsibility for their actions and inactions, the world would be a much better place.
