Gloria Steinem worked for the CIA and dated Henry Kissinger.

when i talk about White Woman, Capitalist, Imperialist Feminism, am talking about La Steinem.

Steinem succeeded in making #feminism only about #abortion and not about the obvious endgame to smashing #inequality: #socialism.

that’s why Steinem was never the champion of #UBI or #Medicare4All. that’s why she was nowhere defending “welfare queens” from corporatists’ witch hunts.

may she rot in nevermore like Kissinger.

Technically she wasn't a CIA employee or agent. She wasn't a spy or an assassin. She was part of a Cold War influence operation to use youth festivals to counter Soviet propaganda. It's pretty much in line with how the US used rock and roll as a tool against communism. I don't know what you mean by "claiming to work for the CIA", but, you make a good point. My point is only that it isn't a simple story.

And then all these interviews of her saying the CIA was "honorable" at that time which no it most certainly was not.

She was also transphobic in 70s thru 90s, but seems to have retracted that in late 2000s?

But she hasn't done much beyond lip service for trans people either, and she waffled a lot on inclusion of trans people in sports, so I've never known what to think of her.

Another recent one: Dolly Parton used to have events glorifying the Confederate side on her Dollywood amusement park (emphasis on "used to", she eventually dropped them) and she was also criticized for her lukewarm positions in human rights, mostly because she feared it would make half of her fandom lash against her if she was more explicit in her politics.

As somebody unfortunately unacquainted with the field, I didn't know that Steinem, and the second wave of feminism in general, were indeed challenged during her lifetime by less conservative feminists - for example, Audre Lorde, Winona LaDuke, to an extent Anna Nieto-Gómez and of course, the biggest one, Kimberlé Crenshaw, who defined the idea of intersectionality partly as a response to what they called "hegemonic feminism", which was perceived to work solely in favor of the majority. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-wave_feminism#Criticism

you know, any time i've pointed out that steinem was a CIA asset, i've been called 'misogynist.'

she was one of the founding pillars of the anti-woman 'power feminism,' wherein women take the places of men in the patriarchal power structure.

to her, feminism is when women pilot the aircraft that bomb unarmed men, women, and children abroad.

sadly, that vision of feminism is the dominant one in the USA.

She did a lot of great things for women's emancipation. Was she perfect? Hell no. Did she believe America (& the CIA) were a mostly cause for good 40 yrs ago? Yes, as did I until about a decade ago. While it's important to call out contradictions in a person, no one is infallible. To dismiss her entirely for some major shortcomings is why we on the left lose so frequently. No one will ever meet all of our standards and we cannot discount people because they aren't perfect.
