Meta: XCancel has been taken down for the time being with a cease and desist letter
You are still required to provide a source for famous people and politicians. Here are the options that I know of that are left.
- archive.is - has been known to modify some things so it's not the best
- web.archive.org/save
- firesky.tv for bluesky
Please, if you know of any others, provide them in the comments. The next couple of months are going to be hell if we don't do this.

Instead of a single website, build an application where users can scrape and share posts/profiles/feeds with each other. You can minimize load on a given user by distributing requests to all users who have the content and are willing to share. That way, it's harder for them to break whatever you're reading twitter for since they have to go after more people who may not even be in a jurisdiction their lawyers can influence.
Like torrenting, but for social media instead of ... linux distributions.

in reply to cockmushroom • • •XCancel is actually one instance of many that was running the Nitter software, so it was pretty close to what you were describing. People could run it themself, or pick the specific server that they wanted (ex. One closer to them).
Unfortunately, the software project itself got shut down: nitter.net/
I imagine we'll see forks on other code repositories soon enough.

You just know these corporate stooges had several meetings about this, talked it over, planned for today.
It should be the final nail in the coffin for xitter for people, but it won't be. They'll just use the app.

Every (corporate) decision - even the bad ones - begins with a thought, a brainstorm, a formal meeting, and then the bureaucratic nuts, bolts and strings.
Maybe some upper level management came across a mention of xcancel, and realized it's cutting off their profit stream (doesn't matter by how little), and it pissed them off, starting the command flow;
or maybe they have a dedicated team to ensure they can farm the most resources/data out of the user base without alternatives, like implementing the ~"X might not work with Advanced Privacy settings on Firefox. Disable it for a better experience" which I'd get all the time if I ever had to visit the main X website. Maybe that's the same team who spearheaded this new move.
Sucks. X has enough money. But for all this about "free speech", and posting porn, and all is free on X, they sure aren't going that way.
