I cannot overstate how much the revolution needs kind, reliable, people who show up when you need them and does not need drug-addled cut-rate Hunter S. Thompson impersonators.

@mxchara @Fruan I'm with you, it was part show part protest. Issue is a lot of young men didnt get the message or the joke. I do wonder if be perpetuated the concept of the edge lord because of the lack of comprehension.

@ahhhhhhhhhhh @Fruan I am not sure yet but I wish to find out. A lot depends (in my opinion) on how Hunter Thompson responded to becoming the idol of Johnny Depp and a bunch of other Hollywood libertines, after Terry Gilliam made his movie

@mxchara @Fruan haha yeah, my take as someone who grew up with all that noise.
It was a show, I wouldnt idolise the man (hes got demons like everyone). But I do see his works to be an interesting take on politics and counter culture in mid 20th century America.
The books and movie are a different breed too. Like comparing fight club the movie and fight club the book.

@ahhhhhhhhhhh @mxchara @Fruan
I got the impression the reason Hunter S Thompson shot himself was a surprisingly pragmatic one.

He was in poor mental and physical health with chronic pain (including effects of various injuries from motorcycle crashes, and a recent hip replacement). His previous drug use would have meant he had significant tolerance to the medications that would normally help a senior with similar conditions, so would have had no other easy way out..

Which is a warning to all that lifestyle *will* catch up with you if you don't get out of it in time (I was lucky I did, many of my friends didn't)

In any case, constant gonzo behaviour ends up making you look like a muppet..

@vfrmedia @mxchara @Fruan memory is supper sketchy here but based off what I was reading at the time (his own works leading into it). It was a jenga tower of reason's. But is how he said he would always go out... Soooo 🤷‍♀️.

@vfrmedia @mxchara @Fruan will say this though George W Bush Jr was 100% one of those reasons. Hunter said so himself. Im paraphrasing but basically.
Ive seen this clown show before and its worse second time around and I'm too tired to fight these bastard's anymore.

@VANTABlack2000 Hunter S. Thompson used to work at our local chippie along with a guy who swore that he was Elvis.

Who was probably not telling the truth either.

@Madagascar_Sky I think sanity is overrated. Our entire civilisation has gone mad, it has been headed for collective suicide ever since the steam engine went mainstream in the late 18th/early 19th century, and it's getting worse the closer we get to the edge. How can people stay sane while being trapped in this asylum which is our modern industrial civilisation?

I dont know if we need more real Hunter S. Thompsons in the world either, defineatly not someting to aspire to be. But I guess if a future H.S.T. is reading this, or mahbe just someone who finds themselves in a similar situation, the best thing that could that could be done is bringing people together in a genuine fashion, less drugs and more art that inspires human connection goes a long way...
