I’m tired of Americans saying Trump’s anti-Canada rhetoric is “just a distraction”.
It seems like a distraction for you because—quite simply—you don’t want to care.
And the reason you don’t want to care is because you believe it won’t impact your life.

in reply to Chris Trottier • • •Everything is a distraction from everything else. All of it is absolutely important and significant, and fundamentally a problem, and that is the problem. So much is happening all at once that many people don't even know where to put their attention anymore. Because it all sucks!
Canada is being mistreated and disrespected, and this is something that should not be ignored. None of it should be ignored. Yet when the noise is this loud, outrage becomes just another static hum, leaving us paralyzed while everything burns at once.
That's not a justified reason for people to turn a blind eye, but it is to say, I think people are running out of mental and emotional bandwidth.
When survival feels like a full-time job, systemic abuse of power starts to look like just another piece of background weather. But that exhaustion is precisely what impunity relies on.
Donald Trump is an asshole and he needs to go, and so do all the corrupt officials who keep enabling him.
We, the United States, have a serious problem.

in reply to Zelda • • •@Zelda On the last point, Canada sort of becomes "More important" than the other things, because as they pointed out on the WAN Show recently (At least, last I recall they mentioned it; could've been Closer Look.), we're kind of the only place that is actually holding Trump and the U.S. Federal Government to account by actually standing up to them.
So much so that "Canada counter tariffing the U.S" is popular in the U.S. polls on the matter...which comes across as weird, because they're *supporting* getting retaliated against by Canada.

Most Americans consider the idea of threatening Canada so absurd that it's hard to take it seriously. It has actually been the subject of a couple of satirical movies.
But then... we felt the same way about Trump getting elected.

And that's the terrifying thing. This stuff is *ridiculous*, but it is also really happening -- and people are getting hurt and killed by it.
