Once again Pope Leo XIV has rejected idea of Anthropic that Claude has a soul. He went one step ahead and called to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
For those who don't know Anthropic did privately lobby Vatican advisers to take the idea of AI consciousness (Soul) seriously, but Pope Leo XIV completely rejected the idea, firmly stating that AI does not possess a soul, feelings, or a moral conscience telegraph.co.uk/business/2026/10/02/anthropic-lobbied-pope-to-argue-ai-conscious-being/

Just because state is reset after task is complete, dos not say anything about consciousness during the task.
Scott Michaud
in reply to tinkel • • •@tinkel @pc_magas Think of it this way.
There is nothing that a GPU can calculate that cannot be done on pencil and paper.
The conversation that you're having with a GPU is purely determined from input and output math. You can chain Superman to a chair, given unlimited pencils and paper, and they will produce the exact same conversation. Therefore, if you believe the conversation is the result of a soul, then you must believe the same of the pencil scratches.
Scott Michaud
in reply to Scott Michaud • • •@tinkel @pc_magas Of course you can believe that the GPU itself has a soul, or the pencil has a soul, or a waterfall has a soul, and some combination do not. That's animism. If you want to believe in animism, that's fine.
But that's irrelevant. The conversation is 100% math. Not _modeled_ by math. Not the calculator. It's the actual math. If you believe it was influenced by a soul, then you must believe any calculator that produces identical results is the same.
Scott Michaud
in reply to Scott Michaud • • •@tinkel @pc_magas And maybe you do want to believe that all calculations, including ones done by pencil and paper, have a soul. That's a valid religion.
But if that seems weird to you? It's identical to a GPU doing it.

I've heard this counter-argument before, but I usually dismiss it because it seems to conflate modeling with the actual process. A ball flying can be modeled with formula, but Newton's Equations (+ air resistance, etc.) aren't keeping the ball in the air.
That said, how good are brain models these days?
Scott Michaud
in reply to Scott Michaud • • •@victorseven @tinkel @pc_magas (bumped to second comment because character limits) In terms of LLMs, though, it's not modeled by math. It _is_ the math. The conversation is a very mechanical transform of input data using multiplication/addition/sine/cosine/etc.
But, again, I'm curious how accurate the models can be.
Victor
in reply to Scott Michaud • • •@scottmichaud Models can be extremely accurate. The main limitation is simulating many neurons. For large networks, people use simplified models, still with surprisingly good results.
I understand what you say about LLMs being the math. My point would be that both in brain and artificial networks there is information processing arising from the physical substrate, either cells or hardware. A 100% precise emulation of a brain in a robot would be conscious, then artificial nets can be too.

In English: "person" and "human" are used interchangeably in casual conversation. It traps non-lawyers into language level confusion.
In German, LLC as a "Das ist eine Person" is non-problematic, but calling a corporation a Mensch would sound completely absurd and ungrammatical. in reply to tinkel • • •Corporate personhood is a huge issue! It's not metaphysical or philosophical or anything. If a corporation is a person, then they are the one who does you wrong, and you have to sue them, not their shareholders.
That's the alpha and omega of corporate personhood. Once upon a time, people invested in a corporation argued "You can't sue us, because we didn't do it. We only hired the corporation to do it so we're innocent." Someone was all "A corporation can't be held accountable because it isn't a person, dumbass," and a bunch of corpo lawyers jumped up and said "Ohhh is that sooooo?"
So that's why corporations are worse than other companies (even big, powerful ones) because their personhood grants shareholders the right to commit crimes with total legal impunity.
Companies with disproportionate influence are still a huge issue themselves.

For the most part these things are stateless. Feed in the same inputs and you get the same outputs, although the user interface tries to hide the fact.
Now if you had a quantum computer AI that is theoretically uncopyable and impossible to inspect, you could talk about a soul. But not with a deterministic machine.

I am not a Christian, even less a Catholic, but this Pope consistently has addressed the core issues of the AI madness, better than any other leading figure. Those submitting to the imagined power of the LLM give up on the deepest source of their own agency, autonomy, creativity and authenticity. The Pope uses religious language to express this stark fact. Substantively he is right, whatever the language.
As humans we have an inner source of acting that picks up invisible threads to other humans and to the potentialities of the world and that cannot be reduced to an algorithm. Call it soul, as an atheist I am OK with that word. The LLM machine tries to void this intangible but real source of agency. Pope Leo is a welcome ally.
Remember the horrors of Paul VI, John Paul II or Benedict XVI? I'd never have expected to see the Catholic church on the right side of a decisive societal battle. Leo is a ray of hope.
