Google is one of the biggest obstacles to privacy. This article will explore how and why to deGoogle yourself to reclaim and protect your digital privacy.
Google follows a predictable pattern whenever there is a legal conflict between maps: appease each country's legal claims when browsed from within each country, then show as a territory in dispute when browsed from anywhere else. They already do so with Crimea (Ukrainian for Ukraine, Russian for Russia, disputed elsewhere), the Gulf of Mexico/America (America from the US, Mexico from Mexico, both for the rest of the world), and now the Lake Ontario/America (same as above).

In Germany it is still displayed as Lake Ontario. Well, sorta. In the description that stupid "new" name is already present. Did not expect Google chicken out that fast.
@stux @tanepiper I think the name changes if you open Google Maps from a non-U.S IP. I tested with VPN, if I use an U.S. IP the name would change to Lake America, if I turn off the VPN, I see the real name of the lake.
The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" in the United States. Since we update Google Maps …
Oh it must be true, now that a Google app says so. Just remember, it only says that within the U.S. or from a U.S. IP. the rest of us, well it's still the good old Lake Ontario, and if Google should try to change that, well Google gets the heave ho not the lake.
If you're fed up with Google Maps for immediately capitulating to nonsense like this, I'd recommend trying out CoMaps or OsmAnd as general-purpose map/navigation apps.
interesting. I'm in the UK and it's still displaying as Ontario. Perhaps that one is purely for US consumption. Not that I'm weighing in on Grovel's side - very far from it.
It does not bode well for humanity that all it took to go from "Don't be evil" to "We would like to be considered for the Evilest Company In The World Award" was a bunch of money.
What are good alternatives to Google Maps on Android? Google Maps has had lots of issues lately including political stuff and constantly trying to send me through closed roads with alternative routes also trying to go through closed roads.
Also Google Maps constantly tries to get me to drive on bike and hiking paths and support hasnt done anything despite me making complaints.

Google makes it impossible to NOT use their goddamned app with that crap. Has someone found a workaround?
