Danny Masterson Loses Rape Conviction Appeal, Judges Uphold 30-Year Prison Sentence

in reply to [object Object]

Tell me about it. He was the most popular character in a wildly successful sitcom, and then transitioned from TV star to a successful DJ in an era where no one makes it big as a DJ anymore.

Bro was living my dream, and he had to go and fuck it all up by being a rapist. He should have listened to Conan.

Why are you asking people to [touch your balls]? That's the more important question. Accidents aside, that's the most important thing.
I've heard about you, and you'll be caught soon; I know you will.

I know it’s not about sex, but about power. But in his position, he almost certainly had many willing women throwing themselves at him, and he felt the need to rape people?

Like I said, it’s about power, not sex, but he also had a tonne of power. Why do this, given all that? The fuck is so broken about this fucker that all the free sex and so much career power wasn’t enough?

Personally, I veered all the opposite way - now I avoid entertainment in general out of ethical principle, save for very counted exceptions, because 1. people are generally easy to corrupt, so even someone generally regarded as clean can get cancelled at any point in the future, and 2. the entertainment industry has made it their modus operandi to never separate the art from the artist, therefore making the industry in general more and more morally corrupt. And since checking every single individual credit on every single individual work of entertainment in order to avoid supporting immoral people is prohibitively time-consuming, it has become stochastically immoral to have fun. Most people refuse to accept it though, and that's precisely on what the industry counts to keep things under wraps for as long as possible.

I'm with you. The people who struggle with it really make no sense to me.

Kanye is a right fucktard but he has written some goddamn bangers.

Polanski and Allen are amazing directors that are disgusting people.

Arnold cheated on his wife but he made so many awesome movies as an action star.

List goes on and on back to th beginning of time.

People are people. We are all flawed. Yes even you reading this now whoever you are. Get over yourself.

Cool. I guess we should all give up everyone. We're all just shitty and you better hope you're not on the wrong end of someone shitty because we're shitty too and will continue to enable their behavior. How about you grow up? Trying to do better is a human trait, fuck you for giving everyone a pass on being shitty and not be accountable to each other.
in reply to Huegoe
It's made a lot easier when the shitty artist is dead. It's appropriate to talk about H. P. Lovecraft's racism and xenophobia, hell it even informs understanding of his work a bit better, but buying his work doesn't fund ongoing bad acts because he's been dead for almost a century. If you're going to be a terrible person, the least you can do is also be dead.
in reply to Huegoe
If information wants to be free, and if buying not equaling owning means that piracy isn't theft, then art doesn't belong to artists anyway. Additionally, it's facile to be too black-and-white about crime; criminals are still humans and being shit in one aspect of their lives doesn't necessitate that we act as if they were shit in EVERY aspect of their lives. Even criminals still bleed when pricked and laugh when tickled, etc. If we reject the possibility of redemption/rehabilitation, then we might as well execute all criminals. Now, that's not to say that we should simply forgive every criminal. But rehabilitation only works when it focuses on reminding the criminal of how they can still be useful to society.

Waiting for the Olsen twins and Hilary Duff to turn 18. Now for what it's worth, Eminem said the same in a song.

On "The Rosie O'Donnell Show" in 2002, Kutcher himself would admit, "She was 14 when we started the show. I was, like, 19, right? And they're like, 'Okay, you guys are going to be making out in this scene,' and I'm thinking, like, 'Wait, this is slightly illegal, right?'" Despite these reservations, Kutcher said that he had attempted to "French kiss" Kunis during the scene

In an episode of "Hot Ones" from 2019, Kutcher was asked to share anything he could about the famous parties Diddy threw. Kutcher said, "I've got a lot I can't tell,"

Amazing how the low effort responses always say shit like "do more research" instead of actually contributing to the discussion in a meaningful way.

You're clearly referencing the Church of Scientology part. Was there something in my comment that intimated that Scientology wasn't a factor at all? No. While it very well could be a facto, likely even, simply supporting a friend they thought could be falsely accused is also likely.

Emily hasn't talked about the Church at all, and was last seen at a Church gala way back in 2013. Then there are the song lyrics back from her time in Dead Sara that seem to reference criticism of the Church. And the fact she identifies as queer, something the Church is very outspoken against. But of course the Church must be the only explanation, simply because it's tangentially involved. To the point that you feel the need to assume someone talking about this online and not mentioning Scientology clearly must have no idea what's going on, and a low effort comment is necessary.

in reply to DrSoap

We're clearly talking about two completely different things here. And you seem to be ignoring that, despite me very specifically talking about the last time she was (at least publicly) directly involved with Church events being over a decade ago, lyrics that seem to criticize the Church, and her public personal identity not matching Church beliefs.

You are talking about Scientology involvement with Masterson's actions in general. I don't give a shit about that. That's obvious. Stevie Wonder could see that involvement. Why would I even mention all those other things if I was talking about the Church helping Masterson, covering it up, etc.?

I only care about whether Emily is actively involved with the Church still, and whether that is why she went to the first hearing. That is what the original comment we're responding to was talking about. And there isn't any evidence of that. Only that she went to support (at the time) a friend she believed.

It is literally a Google search away. I'm annoyed that I have to provide links but the musings they pulled out of thin air seem to be taken as gospel.

The onus is on the person making a claim. No one needs to provide sources to back up the statement "people often jump to conclusions". Specific accusations, ragingly given in response to that quote, should be at least bothered to paste a link, unless their intent is to sound like a douchebag.

You do make a good point that no one should've spent time replying to you though. You gave no reason to.

and like cowards fled to EUROPE to avoid controversy in the states. it was right to "shit" on MEG in family guy. its a thing for rich white people facing racism, rape, Molestation,,,etc/ flee to a country that is not aware of the drama back in the states. Also japan is another favorite spot.

also funny that not long after ellen degeneres fled to europe after diddy was charged, hmm looks like she could be involved too.

Excuse my surprise here. I know nothing about this case. I never saw the tv show and don't know this person. But, I am so surprised this rich famous guy gets 30 years when my entire 50 plus year life has been constantly peppered with stories of randos getting community service and probation for raping women, and even children. More than one of them have recieved supreme court appointments. What percent of convicted rapists get sentenced to 30 years or more in the USA? I asked AI and it claims less than 4%. Was he not in the right frat or something? Like, remember Brock the fratboy who raped an unconcious woman in a dumpster enclosure and got let off? I don't understand what goes on, and I don't trust it. That symbol of blind justice has a terrible conotation in this context.

I'm perhaps being too edgy, forgive me. But, you must see that even if this guy deserves 30 years, which I am not disputing. How is there such a wild variance in American "Justice" ? Its just wild to me.

That's not why he was convicted as a famous rich white guy, that was just some lifelong friends standing by him. They didn't deny his guilt, they just asked for leniency for their friend, which was rejected.

He was found guilty because the judge didn't let it be about his celebrity, OR his membership in Scientology. He was treated like any other citizen accused of multiple rapes. That's how it should be for every citizen.

in reply to BarneyPiccolo
He must not have had any dirt on anyone powerful. A lot of people who were going to Epstein's Island or his parties weren't necessarily pedophiles. They just wanted to be part of his circle enough to not not care about the rape. They wanted to be trusted by his circle and the method of binding those people together was sharing in crimes and have blackmail on each other. I'm guessing that Masterson never got into one of those circles, so no one powerful ever made any phone calls to the investigators or judge on his behalf.

I've just checked and in Spain maximum jail time for rape with aggravating circumstances is 15 years. People usually get ~20 years for manslaughter. He was found guilty of 2 counts of rape and got 30 years to life. I'm as baffled as you are.

If I had to guess, it's because he either didn't have enough money to bribe anyone (he wasn't rich enough, this seems likely since it says his net worth is only 8 million), or he got unlucky with a judge that just isn't corrupt. It may be a combination of both.
in reply to SHY_TUCKER

I’m surprised as well given that the first jury hung on all charges and these were older cases from 2001 and 2003.

Based on the CA statute it looks like he got the max for two rapes with bodily injury. Also potentially a gun was involved in one incident, and there was a pattern of other assaults not part of the case.

Sorry I don’t have much detail beyond that, tried to look it up quickly.

in reply to SHY_TUCKER

Excuse me but you should never mention brock turner without the asshole judge Aaron perskey who let him off with the "boys will be boys" rhetoric. Or Dan Turner his gross dad who wrote the letter about how "his son's future is ruined".

These are the poster children of empowered toxic masculinity.

Anyone ever need a perfect example of unchecked white male privilege just need to look at these three fuckwits.

Other than a bunch of his co-stars on that 70s show.

The actress that played Kitty Foreman was so impressed that he made the other teenaged stars make a pact to stay away from weed that she's willing to forgive a little rape. Which also checks out for the type of person he seems to be: very vocally "good" but a real piece of shit behind closed doors. It's all PR.

The actor that played Red Foreman thinks someone taking a leadership role amongst the group should forgive a bit of rape. Makes me wonder if it was more of a fucked up dynamic because that also fits the type that I've seen, but there was also a lot of money and a contract keeping them together, which gives that type power.

Though Jackie and Micheal (can't remember what the rest of them called him) also thought his rape wasn't that bad.

I can't find any evidence that Topher Grace (Eric), Laura Prepon (Donna), or Wilmer Valderrama (Fez) ever supported him after the allegations came out. I wonder if they appreciated his "leadership" as much as the old ones did or started to see through him while they were still filming the show.

in reply to SaveTheTuaHawk

Well that's disappointing. No more from 70s show but Tara from walking dead and Francis from Malcolm in the Middle are on that list (and have the same last name, siblings/cousins?, plus another one that was on 40 year old virgin).

Don't really recognise anyone else from the list, though not really surprised he has the support of a producer from 2 and a half men.

in reply to Bipauler

All I know was that I wasn't able to find any public statements she made in support of him regarding the rape charges or sentencing.

But I did find information saying she quietly left scientology a while ago (and later talked about it) and that she dated Chris Masterson (who played Francis on Malcolm in the Middle and is on that IMDB list of Danny supporters), not Danny, though Danny did introduce her to Scientology.

in reply to MehBlah
Either way, they are hilarious when they try to virtue signal to you using something you don't even see as a virtue. Religion is a pretty common one (though he's scientologist, which hits a bit differently and is probably why he depended on the next one...), along with support following various controversial laws (like "weed is illegal thus bad" in this case).
