How Shakhtar Donetsk made Stamford Bridge home: ‘We brought smiles to children under attack’

It is midday on Saturday in Ukraine and 12 vehicles transporting more than 100 Shakhtar Donetsk personnel are setting off for a home game.

What makes this unusual? The home fixture is not for another four days. And it is taking place more than 1,000 miles from Shakhtar’s Lviv training base, at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium in London.

I am very glad to hear that they are getting help from sports psychologists because all of this has to be so incredibly difficult

“I know they (sports psychologists) are used a lot elsewhere, but in Ukrainian football it is quite a new thing,” says Khlivniuk. “But for us, it is not just about (sporting) performance — it is also about the situation (in Ukraine). It is not easy, even for me. Last week when I woke up, I saw there was an attack near my house in Kyiv.”

Especially considering that 1. the town they used to represent, and had to flee from, is now taken by another country, and 2. their very name and emblem have been taken by said country to fill it with foreign scabs and turn it into the new "original" team. theguardian.com/football/2026/may/27/uefa-action-russia-fake-ukrainian-clubs-shakhtar-donetsk
