The Trump regime's paranoid xenophobia can only explain part of this. I think the Intercept is right here that they're primarily directing this at domestic dissidents.

IMO, the Trump regime is opening the door towards banning overseas-hosted communications platforms more broadly. If they can close that off, then they can herd dissidents and undesirables into domestic platforms run by US big tech firms that are happy to support the regime's large and growing domestic spy apparatus.

@DaveMWilburn I would sooner disconnect entirely from the Internet than have an account with FB, Google, etc.

Real worst case we spread news on flash drives and device to device when in range. If devices only play approved files, back to analog media such as film and tape.

Sneakernet is a royal pain in the ass to censor

@LukefromDC @DaveMWilburn Cuba had something called "the package" wherein a portable hard drive was passed around with torrented movies and music.

North Koreans use micro SD cards, which are very easy to hide, and portable video players.

It would be nice if i2p torrenting was fast and easy to set up. Not only for the torrenters, but it would provide abundant cover traffic for real uses.

@alpacamale Not being a company helps in this situation. Donations hand to hand with cash are impossible to stop. Cryptocurrency donations probably difficult to stop.

Prepaid gift cards in countries where any form of them can be activated without ID could be used directly to pay for services, and this sort of thing can be also done through front groups that can be made difficult to trace.

If US sanctions worked, the Ukraine war would be over and a pro-US puppet regime would be running Iran.

Unfortunately the chances of Democrats hounding these criminals is practically zero –on account of norms long forgotten. We'll be lucky if sanctions on the ICC are lifted.
