There has never been a better time to introduce young French people to the wonderful world of decentralized social networks and - optional - #selfhosting.

I was stoked to see that BABEL (e.g. RFC 8966, 9229, etc. also see: irif.fr/~jch/software/babel/) implementations have made their way into BIRD (bird.network.cz/)! Though, I have yet to test that; perhaps they are now less full of Linuxisms and "academic caliber" code and can potentially operate on some BSDs at long last?!

If you have friend group that isn't yet planning for internet restrictions, now is a great time to start.

I'm no pro, but I think Signal is a bare-minimum start. And I try to follow folks on Mastodon like @_elena.

"The French government explored ways of blocking social networks during last Saturday's protests"

this is fucking wild to read. that's what authoritarian governments (eg. in Syria) have been doing at various points in the past decade, to much derision from western media as "dystopian". and yet it's now being reported on as if it's a normal thing to be doing.

the political frame truly has shifted, huh?

@joachim that will need to be done IRL... Because the mass media won't mention it even in Europe and the alternative would be to create TikTok content everyday in hope the algorithm does not shadow bans us for promoting alternatives before we reach an audience.

Gotta print zines and hand them at highschoolers in the street

@Julianoe @joachim Absolutely.

The reluctance of mainstream media to ever discuss the Fediverse, mesh, reticulum & self-hosting TOTALLY MAKES SENSE NOW.

They are afraid of things they can’t control, so they want to keep the general public in the dark about all this…

no one better than the French to organise in protests. They started using bitchat that messages via Bluetooth. Anyone going around to a protest without airplane mode is signaling their location. Public cameras and highway cameras were covered. They know what to do

100%. I tested it and it demands all sort of permissions to allow you to use. Effectively you wouldn't be turning your location data to service providers but straight to Google and Apple. It is not great but it adds another layer of protection from disclosure, or at the very least makes it lagging and worthless. But it does set the trend into decentralised peer to peer messaging.
It is not revolutionary tech, I keep saying/thinking all that the tech was already invented, there's not many breakthroughs left to discover. What is revolutionary is it's usage, for good and for worse
