Maybe I'll be wrong. But I get a strange feeling that there'll be a not-insignificant size Reddit thread talking about how crap and buggy the new launcher is within a matter of days...
@mayke @oracle@phantomthieves.net #ClientSideAnticheat of *any type* is #malware and should *NEVER* be endorsed or even allowed to begin with!
- If they can't be assed to do #DedicadedServers and #Anticheat on them, then they shouldn't be allowed to …
@winterknight1337 well I use their garbage only through Heroic Games Launcher anyways 🤷🏿♀️
Epic Games is the perfect example for a "Consumer Last" company and I hope they die in a fire (read: Crash hard, go Chapter 11 and da a "Fail at Capitalism")

I certainly want to know if their eBPF solution is indeed as invasive as their KLAC for Windows or if, by miracle, they're relying solely on open-source kernel hardening.
I stole this from @oracle@phantomthieves.net : it seems Epic has quietly made Fortnite available on Linux, BUT the thing that has me concerned is they have launched a new iteration of their Anti-Cheat software for Linux. 😵💫
https://onlineservices.
"Waaaah! Programming is hard!" Yeah, it's a skill. Some of us bothered to learn how to do it. Some of us even ENJOY doing it. Some of us don't treat our craft with contempt. Can't stand the heat? Get out of the chassis.
The only hard part about making a games launcher for linux is persuading linux users not to bypass it to run the game directly without being subjected to all the ads that are the main reason for the launcher existing.
I've been using the Heroic Launcher for a while now to access games from Epic since I game from a Linux system. To my knowledge they don't use AI in their code pipelines at all, and the launcher is completely open source. So for folks who maybe gave Epic their money once upon a time and want to continue to play said game without an AI monstrosity as a gateway, I can say that my experience with Heroic has been pretty excellent.
this is the company that needed a petition to get them to make fixes on Unreal and then made a pretty basic UT that suddenly got better once Q3’s demo was released and some ideas could be copied.
Imo if he didn’t push his engine on everyone the company wouldn’t exist. That’s why he wants to be able to push his crap store on everyone. Lock in is their only means of survival.
I love that they're going on about how much faster it is than Steam when the loading speed was never the reason people weren't buying stuff from their shitty service.
Steam could take five minutes to load and Epic could load in five seconds and I'm still not buying from Epic.
I get that from time to time, because I've overloaded my system, and I think it's because X11 just can't keep up. But I'm not sure I can tell what you're using for your system (I've not enbiggened yet).
@clayfoot The old launcher is really bad, it lags a LOT and for most gamers, having Fab and UE library and the store combined felt like bloat. Funnily for me, it is the games and library sections that lag and freeze. It is embarassing how terrible their launchers are.
I haven't seen the new slop launcher, but the old one is hated by almost everyone. I might just move to Heroic rather than use new slop
@nullagent it happens the same way a lot of junk comes out of Google and Microsoft. From the outside they look like big monoliths, but on the inside you have a bunch of teams all desperately scrambling for recognition (see also "crabs in a bucket"). There’s a good chance that those teams are incentivized or measured on how fast and publicly they do things not on how well they do things.
I can understand it even though I’m not in that world. If I’m a low to mid-level "contributor" in one of those companies and I’ve been there for a few years, the company performance has absolutely nothing to do with what I get paid - and these days any individual contribution that I may have been responsible for is going to be overshadowed by some executive's vibecoding because they want to put their stamp on it.
Maybe I get a bonus at the department level if we ship. I can even use that as a talking point when I’m interviewing, because if I’ve been ther

Maybe I get a bonus at the department level if we ship. I can even use that as a talking point when I’m interviewing, because if I’ve been there for more than three years, I may be looking at jumping ship to another company. And if the product is crap, I can use that as part of my interviewing as well because obviously I left because the company insists on releasing vibe coded slop, and I’d like to go someplace where I can actually contribute.
A new Steam Client update has been released and will be automatically downloaded.
Homescreen - Big Picture Mode
Added a new 'Big Art Mode' option for the home screen. This can be enabled in Settings > Home.
@kjv @clayfoot Epic have been surprisingly incompetent with the launcher, so it's not entirely surprising that they have tried just vibing another. It's so bad, that there was a chance vibe output would be superficially better.
Of course, not anything I'd let even near my payment info, but they aren't exactly known for thinking things through. It would affect their development velocity or some bullshit (even pre-AI).
Game launchers are a plague. If I installed the game on my computer, why can't it launch itself like any other programs and why does it have to go through a middleman full of slop?
