@Chris1776 yes. then i found out prices in the used market have also been pushed upward as buyers have flooded teh 2nd hand market. This spike in demand allows sellers on local marketplaces to charge more for older hardware. The secondary effect, i guess.
@Chris1776 also avoid putting huge games out, that are mostly containing 4K videos, would help. See how the remake Of Mortal Kombat 1 sucks 149GB (!) of disk space, just because they have ~5hrs of Videos in 4K resolution, that aren't useful for the game itself.
Based on leaked material, a probable PC version of GTA6 would eat 500GB or more..
@Chris1776 I understand the drive to reach life-like texture precision, but in the current market it isn't feasible anymore. Game Devs should target 10y.o. PCs as baseline, not the latest super-duper machines with expensive graphic cards.
@Chris1776 I don't understand why a single guy (FitGirl) is able to compress games or remove unnecessary bloat from games, but game houses keep bringing out huge content
if it keeps going, AI will kill personal computing as a concept. then the tech oligarchs will rent us servers for every little thing we have been able to do at home for half a century
@wizbean Sounds like the end goal. Accelerating the tech cycle back to rented, centralized computing. Next up is less general purpose computing on hand and dedicated dumb terminals as the standard.
@drwho @wizbean I can't make my PC last forever but when people told me I should stop buying movies on physical media and just use a streaming service I chose to not listen. I have more than 3000 movies and series burned to multiple HDs and I saved all of the disks as well. I'm glad I picked up a 12T backup disk for my NAS though, that $160 disk is now $300 minimum. Fuck #AI and fuck #TechBros forever.
@mycotropic @wizbean I have no spare drives I trust because they now go for anywhere between $275us and $600us, and that's just for the factory renewed ones. And, while I have reason to trust my backup provider for the foreseeable future, I don't trust them for much in the way of active storage (mostly due to the bandwidth limits of wifi).
"AI" has killed affordable everything, but especially computer things. Before this bullshit, I was planning on making a combination media server, mastodon instance, and NAS. It doesn't even have to be all that modern, 5-year-old hardware would do, but even that's more expensive now than it was new.
And killing internet businesses. The constant hammering of AI scraper bots, and their content is being presented to AI users without the businesses getting the web traffic. This kills their advertising profit. A double whammy.
And even the alternative, streaming from the cloud, is starting to become more expensive as well. At this point I expect gaming to become unaffordable to the point of cultural irrelevance
